A Guide to Apalachicola, Florida

Nestled on Florida’s Forgotten Coast about 90 miles from Tallahassee, Apalachicola is a charming and historic town known for its fresh seafood, picturesque waterfront views, and laid-back atmosphere. It’s the simplest of the simple and that’s quite a compliment. (If you know 30A, it’s a bit like what 30A used to be.) Whether you’re looking to indulge in world-famous oysters, explore quaint shops, or simply relax and soak in the Old Florida charm, Apalachicola offers a delightful escape. Here’s your guide to where to stay, eat, shop, and explore in this coastal gem.

Where to Stay

For a stay that perfectly complements the town’s historic charm, The Gibson Inn is a must. (We’ve stayed here a couple times including a little road trip ages ago when I was pregnant with Collins.) This beautifully restored boutique hotel is right in the heart of downtown, making it easy to walk to restaurants, shops, and the scenic waterfront. The cozy, elegant decor and wrap-around porches add to its inviting ambiance. In addition to the original inn, there’s a separate home on the same block called Buck House with additional room options. Booking info for The Gibson here.

Another wonderful option is The Consulate, located on the Apalachicola River, just two blocks from The Gibson. This waterfront spot is a little more tucked away, but still within easy walking distance to everything. It has four separate second-floor units and I think we’ve booked the Consul Suite 4-5 times over the years for both family and friend trips. WIth a full kitchen, living room, and 2-bedrooms plus sleeper sofa, the layout gives you options for a larger group. Plus, there’s a full porch balcony with rocking chairs and serene views overlooking the water, making it a perfect retreat for those who want a peaceful stay with a touch of luxury. Where to Eat

Seafood is king in Apalachicola, and Hunter and I have our go-to favorites when we visit:

  • Indian Pass Raw Bar – Known for its laid-back, no-frills atmosphere, where you grab a plastic chair, mark your order on a paper menu, and pull your drink from the fridge. The oysters are the main attraction, but everything on the menu is worth trying.
  • The Station Raw Bar – If you’re sensing a raw bar theme, you’re right. This is a creative update to an old gas station and the food is mouth watering. Their baked oysters, like the parmesan and garlic variety, are a must-try, especially for anyone new to oysters.
  • Up the Creek Raw Bar – Just down the street, this is a classic casual spot with a great deck overlooking the water. Perfect for a relaxed meal with a view.
  • Apalachicola Seafood Grille – A classic spot for fried seafood platters and a casual, friendly vibe.
  • Hole in the Wall – Small but mighty, this hidden gem serves up some of the best oysters and seafood in town.
  • The Owl Café – A more upscale option with a fantastic wine selection and elevated seafood dishes. Perfect for a date night or special occasion.
  • Half Shell Dockside – This is another great laid-back spot on the water with a wall of buoys to greet you, coastal dining indoors, cool patio vibes outside and even a lively dock bar. We love watching the boats come and go while devouring any of their fresh seafood offerings. Thisone is a few blocks away so a car ride is best, though we have walked the half mile in sandals before!
  • Cafe Con Leche Bakery – A cozy spot for fresh pastries, Cuban coffee, and a relaxed breakfast to start your day right.

Where to Shop

Apalachicola’s downtown is filled with charming boutiques offering everything from coastal decor to unique gifts and stylish clothing. It’s the kind of place where you find a special book, a trinket to cherish, a stylish coastal find or the joy of wandering from shop to shop. Our personal favorites include:

  • Becasa – A beautifully curated boutique with stylish clothing, accessories, and home goods with a relaxed, coastal feel.
  • Downtown Books & Purl – A cozy independent bookstore that also sells yarn and knitting supplies, making it the perfect place to pick up a vacation read or a new creative project.
  • Grady Market – Housed in a historic building, this boutique is a great stop for high-end gifts, clothing, and coastal-inspired finds for everyone in the family. Think old-fashioned shopping under one roof with an updated southern style.
  • La Robe Boutique – A stylish boutique offering a curated selection of coastal-inspired fashion and accessories.
  • Riverlily – A delightful shop filled with home goods, clothing, and accessories with a touch of Southern charm.

What to Do

  • Go Fishing – Whether you bring your own boat or book a charter, the inshore fishing here is fantastic. Expect to catch redfish, trout, and more in the bay’s calm waters. If you need a specific captain rec, reach out to Hunter (@floridaboyadv) and he can suggest the best.
  • Explore the Waterfront – Stroll along the docks and take in the sights of shrimp boats bobbing in the marina. It’s a postcard-perfect scene that captures the essence of Apalachicola.
  • Enjoy the Local Art Scene – Visit one of the many galleries downtown featuring coastal and Southern-inspired art.
  • Take it Slow – One of the best things about Apalachicola is its relaxed pace. Whether you’re sipping a coffee on a breezy porch or watching the sunset over the water, this town is all about slowing down and soaking it in.
  • Short Day Trips – If you’re up for a little extra exploring, take a short drive to nearby Port St. Joe, Cape San Blas, or Carrabelle for more coastal charm and outdoor adventures.

Fun Facts About Apalachicola

  • Did you know this is the other 30A? Technically, the road that goes to Cape San Blas (not far from Apalachicola) shares the same road name as the bustling 30A in Walton County, but the Port St Joe and Apalachicola areas represent a simpler, quieter version of coastal life. (A little like what 30A was 20-30 years ago).
  • The town was once one of the largest cotton ports on the Gulf of Mexico, playing a significant role in the region’s trade history.
  • Apalachicola is the birthplace of the refrigerator! Dr. John Gorrie, a local physician, invented an early form of refrigeration to help treat yellow fever patients. Can you imagine life without that — especially in Florida?

Final Thoughts

Dots on the map like this remind me why small towns and the simple life are so often romanticized in novels and Hallmark movies. They can be easy to miss and often overlooked, but when you give a little town like this a chance to woo you, it will. Simple doesn’t have to mean boring—in fact, it can be the perfect way to reset and rediscover your best self.

Apalachicola is the kind of place that invites you to unwind, indulge in incredible seafood, and appreciate the beauty of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Whether you come for the oysters, the history, or the serene waterfront, one thing is certain—you’ll leave with a newfound love for this coastal town.
