Ever think about how much a single color can impact your mood and your mindset? While I definitely play favorites — pink, peach, turquoise, I’m looking at you — I can easily attest to the power of color and its ability to set the tone. To me, happy colors are some of life’s most darling details and a language all their own. White emits a decidedly clean and open energy. Pink evokes a sense of femininity and even nostalgia. For my friend Catherine Walega, the owner of Indigo boutique in Watercolor, indigo blue is a source of inspiration, connection and realization. As a fellow color lover, I couldn’t resist asking how she landed on that shade.
“Naming the store, I saw something about the color indigo. There are a lot of spiritual qualities to this color and I’ve always loved the color blue, but there’s something about indigo and the crossover between fashion, its spiritual elements and the fact that it comes from the earth as an indigo plant and that’s how we get the blue dye. There’s a whole connection and it felt right. It just spoke to me.”
The boutique, located at 6 Watercolor Boulevard #101 (midway between Wine World and Watercolor Beach Club), offers a mix of carefully selected clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories. True to its name, many are offered in shades of indigo along with classic white, organic tones and beachy palettes. Indigo’s style includes a mix of pieces that work just as well with sandy toes as they do at an upscale sunset dinner. Think boho tunics, glamorous bags, flowy flare bottoms, chic sunglasses, artisan jewelry, retro tees and classic coastal silhouettes.
Catherine says, “It’s really a mix and that’s true to how I am – dressed up and dressed down. Relaxed with a flash of elegance.” Even the cash wrap represents that same mingling of styles. Each facet boasts its own aesthetic, mixing a door from 1700s Spain next to glossy shiplap and a modern deep blue acrylic.
In her quest to curate just the right mix of casual and cultured, Catherine purposely searches beyond the south on buying trips for the store. “Indigo definitely has undertones of a California beach vibe and part of that comes from going to market there. We love to source brands and products that aren’t found in nearby stores and honestly, I really look for underdog brands and small batch production artisans.”
At Indigo, you can find unique lines and a variety of pieces that blend well together and create a new-to-you shopping experience. While I was shopping, I spotted items like gorgeous dark denim, dainty gold earrings, a beautiful statement necklace, pretty light wash jeans, an indigo jumpsuit, leather sandals and a flowy white sundress. There’s just so much to love! “These lines are essentially our signature collection and I want people to come in and discover for themselves what speaks to them.”
One of the qualities of indigo blue is its ability to encourage a new perspective, to allow us to step outside our everyday norms and find something new. What better time than now to get to know this adorable 30A boutique? Indigo is celebrating its first anniversary with a fun party set for March 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. Guests will enjoy specialty cocktails and live music by Zoe Walega, one of Catherine’s daughters. Attendees will also have an opportunity to win giveaways and receive 20% off all purchases during the event.
